Bang!

This year’s Bang! Festival at Broadway is going to be a good one - we’re already looking forward to it…  Spread over 3 days, and celebrating it’s 10th birthday, we just can’t wait!

myths

As usual we bombarded them with our recent films! Watch out for a selection of modern day myths - Medusa, Minotaur, Cyclops and Daedalus & Icarus, as well as some living cave art in Stone Age Stories

See you there?!  27th, 28th and 29th of November

Meden BSF

5th November, 2009

Meden School are working with BSF - Building Schools for the Future - to build and develop their school.

Miss Musson, Head of Performance, asked us to work with a team of BSF Arts pupils for 3 days, to bring together their ideas for a new school using film and animation; students considered how to develop skills and learning in creative arts, and ways of integrating this into the rest of school.

The resulting film was meant to be 2 minutes, but with so many great ideas and brilliant bits of footage, it turned out to be six! Please take a look…

If you’ve been involved in this project - students, school staff, BSF team, anyone - please add your comments below!

Lincolnshire Films

5th November, 2009

The challenge was set by The Mighty Creatives - to make six short films, in six days, with with six (or seven!) pupils in each of the six schools…

Lincoln 01

Off we went - filming, animating, acting, drawing, photography, interviews, sound recording - we used a huge range of techniques to capture pupils thoughts about their work with Creative Partnerships.

The six schools were all involved in the first year of CP work in Lincolnshire - each school worked with different practitioners, and ran different projects. The films visually reflect the nature of the projects, whilst taking a focus on pupil involvement and their points of view.

Throughout our adventures we kept a blog, click below to see what happened and watch the films..

Draw.Cut.Spray.Skate.

17th June, 2009

For the past few weeks we’ve been helping people at the Emmanuel school work towards their Bronze art award… A whirlwind project, super-quick stencil making, cutting, spraying, and scrubbing paint off our hands.

We barely had time to delve into the complexity of different techniques, but hopefully the whole thing has been inspiring - we hope that some people might have the confidence now to use stencils and sprays in other artwork. It was a real pleasure to work with the year 9 pupils - everyone has worked incredibly hard and achieved so much. We just wish we’d had longer… We’ll add more pictures once the boards are finished. In the meantime, if you worked with us on this project, please tell us what you thought! Leave any comments below.

If you’re thinking of doing this yourself, be sure to visit the Montana shop - a wonderful world of colours, cans, paints and pens.

This was a Creative Partnerships project and involved 2 more artists, Rachel making masks and Julie exploring set design with other year 9 pupils - we’re looking forward to seeing what they’ve been up to…

Ancient Bones

6th July, 2008

We’ve been thinking about bones for a recent project at Newgate Lane Primary School!

Class four cast their minds back 13,000 years to create ice age art and bone flutes for Shine Week at Creswell Crags. The bones that they made have been buried in an archaeological dig box for other children to explore, unearth and use to make massive mammoth skeletons, or scary saber tooth shapes!

The flutes that they each made, using hand tools, wood and bone (PVC pipe) are available for visitors to the Crags to play and admire, and so too is a stoneage spooky cave soundtrack that class four composed and recorded with their own instruments.

Keep your eyes (and ears) peeled - the music they recorded will feature in an exciting cave art animation that we’ll add soon…

As if all that wasn’t enough, the children made their own drawing implements and sketched cave art with natural inks and charcoal.

This 3 day Creative Partnerships project, provided interactive resources for lots of school visits arranged to Creswell Crags for Shine Week.

Art Club winners!

29th April, 2008

Last term art club at Rosslyn Park Primary School entered a short film into a national competition called Show Racism the Red Card. This football/sports based charity work within schools to raise awareness of racism, and promote positive behaviour in sporty ways.

We, at art club accept and enjoy each others company wherever we are from. With that in mind, we made a short animated film, featuring each pupil as an animated plasticine character, in which we drew and talked about both good and bad ways to behave, and what racism and friendship means to us…

We were all truly excited when news came that art club had won first prize in the multi-media category! During the day of awards and celebrity (for the 8 filmakers!) the film was also awarded with the competition’s overall prize too.

Soon the 8 young people, aged between 5 and 11 will be off to meet more footballers, and have more fun in Manchester, as they continue to celebrate and enjoy their win…

Art Club is run by Bea Tobolewska. Thanks Bea!

“Changing Spaces”

22nd April, 2008

Pupils at All Saints planned designs, themes, colours, murals, mosaics and more, to transform three of their history classrooms into more inspiring, fun, and colourful places!…

During a very busy and exciting week, the team of 40 students worked together to sand, clean, paint, mosaic and mural the rooms.

Each day brought with it new challenges and changes… By Friday the rooms were finished, friendships had grown, and the team had really pulled together, got to know one another, and seemed to feel a real sense of ownership and pride in their newly aquired skills and achievements.

The themes reflected GCSE subjects taught within the rooms - medieval history; the two world wars; and the History of Medicine.

The finishing touches to each room were framed mono-prints that pupils drew, selected and framed themselves.

We worked with Anna Ogden at All Saints RC School, Mansfield on this Creative Partnerships BAM project

Newgate Lane

19th April, 2008

Our first of many projects with Newgate Lane!

This whole school project was a fun way of encouraging everybody to get involved in literacy. We were all thinking, speaking, reading and listening together, and to each other, whilst also learning a little about simple animation.

Each class learnt about the history of animation, made flickbooks, old fashion optical toys, and used cameras, computers and sound to make their own short snippets of film with words and pictures!

The film turned out to be quite long! But everyone in the school made something, and it got people talking. It was great to hear people reading along when we showed it in assembly.

Our work with Newgate Lane Primary School is organised and funded by Creative Partnerships BAM.

Are we there yet?

16th April, 2008

For three days young people in Derby became animators and film makers, and remembered their experiences of coming to this country as a refugee or asylum seeker.

Light-box drawings, short interviews, and personal images combine to tell a story of their journeys…

The film is now used in schools and training courses in and around Derby and as far away as Australia!

It will also be shown at the Bang! festival, this year, but you can see it here too.

Organised, supported and funded by Derby City Council and Derby City Partnership.

Summer fun

16th April, 2008

For the last 3 summer holidays we’ve worked at at Angel Row Gallery. It’s been really exciting to help young people between the age of 0 to 8 to have fun with art! Mums, dads, brothers, sisters, babies, cousins and friends have gathered in the family room to play, make and enjoy arts activities inspired by the gallery’s exhibitions.

The sessions have seen kites flying in the gallery, birds, butterflies and animals hanging, projected and collaged onto the walls, footprint pictures, treasure maps, masks, mobiles, printing, drawing, and lots of happy messy children and parents covered in colourful paint, glitter, fabric and glue…

Sadly Angel Row Gallery has now closed, but we do hope to be able to run similar summer arts actvities for young people again somewhere else - watch this space!
